PAGANISM’S CREEP

Christ’s Church is continually called to guard the purity and authenticity of its doctrine, worship, and continued daily ministry! Throughout history, the people of God have faced two distinct and ongoing spiritual threats:

While overt persecution often serves to sharpen the Church’s doctrinal convictions and resolve, internal compromise is far more insidious. It does not announce its intention to destroy biblical faith. Instead, it enters quietly — cloaked in familiar religious language, theological vocabulary, church décor, cultural relevance, tradition, religious imagery, musical lyrics, and pragmatic appeals to worldly success.

For Bible-believing Christians joined to evangelical churches which faithfully uphold the absolute authority, inerrancy, and sufficiency of Scripture, the suggestion that paganism could infiltrate their ranks often seems improbable. Yet, from the Gospels, through the New Testament Epistles, Christ’s early Church was repeatedly warned against blending the truth of the Gospel with the surrounding pagan ethos. If modern-day believers assume we are immune to this drift, our spiritual defenses have already been severely compromised.

To address this danger with biblical discernment rather than sensationalism or cultural accommodation, the Church must examine how pagan worldviews, unbiblical spiritual assumptions, and worldly practices subtly creep into congregational life. We must rely on Holy Spirit-directed discernment grounded in God’s Word to expose and dismantle these deceptions.

“Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,’ says the Lord. ‘And do not touch what is unclean; and I will welcome you. And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

We must approach this issue not from the deadness of legalism, but from a heart that pursues spiritual alertness, biblical maturity, and genuine love for Christ our Lord.

Defining “Paganism”

Before one can actually properly evaluate specific practices or church traditions, a clear definition is absolutely essential. Careless accusations serve only to harm the Body of Christ, breed unwarranted division, and obscure genuine / legitimate spiritual dangers.

In a biblical context, paganism refers to any religious system, worldview, image, musical expression, literature, event, or spiritual practice that:

This includes elevating, honoring, or venerating any concept, ideal, created thing, or entity above God (Please study Exodus 20:3–5; Acts 17:22–31). For example, consider the symbols commonly worn as jewelry around necks, on wrists, or dangling from ears. Without falling into legalism, we must ask: “Why would a committed follower of Jesus Christ wear symbols that originate in darkness, the occult, or from the worship of false deities?” And, don’t even get me started on some of the most popular contemporary songs … catchy tunes meshed with ungodly, pagan lyrics!

Scripture strictly forbids seeking spiritual insight through unbiblical channels or practices! (Please Study Deuteronomy 18:9–14; 1 Timothy 2:5–6).

This includes philosophies such as:

  • Pantheism: God is everything and everything is God.
  • Panentheism: God is within everything.
  • Animism: Spiritual forces or spirits inhabit material objects.
  • Dualism: Good and evil are equal, opposing cosmic forces.
  • Deism: Belief in a distant creator detached from creation, rejecting Jesus Christ as Lord and Redeemer.
  • Mysticism: Seeking experiential oneness with the universe or the divine outside biblical truth.
  • Transactional Spiritual Manipulation: Attempting to obligate, bargain with, or control the divine through human formulas and rituals.

Elements of these worldviews are increasingly embraced by broad cultural trends, and unfortunately, have found their way right into various segments of a wider Christian community.

Three Essential Categories of Distinction

To navigate this issue with wisdom, Scripture directs us to carefully differentiate among three diverse categories:

This category involves the direct worship of false deities, demonic invocation, divination, necromancy, sorcery, and the deliberate use or display of occult imagery and relics. Scripture explicitly and repeatedly condemns these practices in numerous places, such as:

“You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.”

1 Corinthians 10:21

Syncretism is the blending of biblical truth with pagan assumptions, philosophies, and practices. In syncretism, orthodox Christian vocabulary is often retained but subtly redefined to accommodate worldly or unbiblical spiritual frameworks (see 2 Kings 17:29–33, 41). This is one of the primary avenues through which paganism infiltrates the Church unnoticed, therefore, unchecked!

“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.”

Colossians 2:8-9

Scripture also recognizes human traditions, calendar observances, artistic expressions, musical styles, linguistic idioms, and regional customs that do not direct worship to false gods or forms of paganism. These matters of Christian liberty must be governed by Biblical Truth, the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit, a mature / spiritually trained conscience, and a commitment to genuinely love and edify others (Please study Romans 14:1–23; 1 Corinthians 8:4–13; 10:23–33).

Recovering Biblical Discernment

Recently, during a discussion about a ministry’s online presence, I asked a simple question: “If a Christian ministry placed a Buddhist image on its website, would you navigate through it without concern?” What if a ministry website adopted a biblical Greek term for its core identity that was specifically designated scripturally as ungodly behavior without any reference or concepts of the One True God? Would we recognize the disconnect, or simply move right on past it?

However, we all make mistakes, and grace surely covers our shortcomings. Nonetheless, we must honestly ask ourselves: “Have we placed spiritual discernment on the shelf?” Are we actually permitting paganism to creep into our lives and churches because we fail to recognize it, or because we choose to look the other way, assuming it doesn’t really matter?

Consider the decisive response of the early believers in Ephesus when they were confronted with the Truth of the Gospel message:

“Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing.”

Acts 19:18-20

Genuine, Christ-centered discernment requires that we evaluate the spiritual meaning, messaging, historical associations, and doctrinal implications of what we allow into our lives, our churches, ministries, and worship. Again, this is not an exercise in legalism or spiritual superiority; however, it is a biblical call / mandate to watchfulness, sobriety, and alertness!

“For you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.”

1 Thessalonians 5:5-6

“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”

1 Corinthians 16:13

To put all this into proper perspective … What message would it send if I, as the pastor, stepped into the pulpit holding a beautiful Bible boldly engraved in silver with an occult pentagram? The medium, the message, and the symbols we embrace carry spiritual significance. Let us be a people who stand firm, test all things against the Scriptures, take our thoughts captive, and keep our Church, our ministries, and our lives uncontaminated for the glory of Christ Jesus!
