“ABSOLUTE”

Here is a word that’s meaning is slipping into human dementia (a progressive condition marked by the development of multiple cognitive deficits)!  While the actual meaning of absolute clearly refers to something that cannot be diminished in any way and exists independently of other things, our societies’ current philosophy and thinking is mostly relative and conditional! That’s how we find male athlete beating the crud out of female boxers in the 2024 Olympics and Riley Gaines losing a trophy to a biological male swimmer. 

While these are simple examples, the idea of absolute even existing is quickly vanishing! Is gravity on our current earth (closed environment) an absolute? Humans can deny the fact of its existence, but why then would we need certain velocities (based on the mass of an object) to escape its forces?

Individuals are now using all types of reasoning and philosophical arguments to escape the forces of absolutes, such as God, Jesus, sin, evil, the devil, human depravity, gender, truth, etc., etc.! The underlying purpose is simple … no accountability to anyone but self. Therefore, if one’s idea about something like God, Jesus, sin, evil, the devil, human depravity, gender, truth, etc., etc. changes, then that’s perfectly acceptable!  However, absolutes are never relative or comparative! Therefore, God or truth cannot be really good in one moment and terribly evil in another!

Yet this is the world we live in. The prophet Isaiah warned the Hebrew people concerning this type of reasoning and life-philosophy, which would ultimately negatively impact one’s entire society and existence!

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight! Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and valiant men in mixing strong drink, who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away the rights of the ones who are in the right! Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble and dry grass collapses into the flame, so their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts and despised the Word of the Holy One of Israel.” 

Isaiah 5:20-24

While this warning was issued to the Hebrew people, the value and truth of the message for any people cannot be denied! Seems the writing is on the wall (please read Daniel 5)! Recall in verse 4, using the vessels of the temple, “They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.” YIKES! And yes, “My momma told me there would be days like this.”

Nonetheless, believers must awake to the reality that surrounds us, and choose to live in the absolutes of our Lord, which includes His truth, or succumb to the relative, compromising, debauchery of the world and its system. We must choose now, and choose wisely as Joshua, speaking as the Lord’s Prophet declared,

“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:14-15

Yes there is always a choice … serve the gods of the land in which you are living, or serve the Lord!

In John 6, Jesus’ emphasis is on the fact that He Himself is the life that everyone needs, and because of the illustration He uses, many of His followers are troubled. So, Jesus said to the twelve,

“You do not want to go away also, do you?” Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”  

John 6:67-69

Even though the times we live in may be very difficult — morally, ethically, legally, and spiritually … have you “believed,” and have you come to know that Jesus Christ is the “Holy One of God?” Is He your absolute? Is His Truth your absolute? Or perhaps, is there another manmade system of philosophy and belief for God, Jesus, sin, evil, the devil, human depravity, gender, truth, etc., etc. that you’re choosing as your own?

Please carefully consider Romans 6:16-19,

“Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”

LAW

God’s law, as revealed in the Old Testament Scriptures, was never designed to bring about spiritual redemption and / or the salvation of humanity! While some teach that the keeping of the Law was the means and method of salvation before Christ, that concept works to instill much confusion. Therefore, one might legitimately ask, why was the O.T. Law given to God’s people?

First, the Law was designed to identify and expose one’s sin and clearly reveal the true spiritual condition of individuals.  Thus, it serves as a comparative test … this is what God says is right, perfect, and desirable, as compared to the reality of one’s own thinking, desires, actions, etc.  In essence, a clear, well-lit mirror that accurately reflects and reveals the exact image that is presented before it!  Therefore, God’s law revealed the defects and shortcomings of a person’s life / character.  The effect was to be as if one is driving down the highway at an accelerated speed and sees a patrol officer. Immediately the foot is lifted from the gas pedal and the vehicle slows to an appropriate / legal speed. That’s exactly what was intended to happen in the life of God’s people … when they recognized the Lord’s criteria, they adjusted their behavior, thoughts, etc. into compliance with the things of God (holiness, righteousness, justice, etc.).

Second, the Law was presented to the nation of God’s people (the 12 original tribes of Israel) to regulate their society. It was introduced when the Israelites sinned in the wilderness by worshiping the golden calf. The Lord God always wanted human beings to live by His guidance and leading. But those escaping their demise in Egypt were unwilling. As a result, God gave them a set of rules and regulations by which they would / should be governed. Every nation has laws, designating some behaviors as “legal’ and some as “illegal.” Generally speaking, illegal actions were / are accompanied by some form of judicial style punishment to offer recompense to the society or individuals damaged as a result of the Law being violated. As in the illustration stated above, those that refuse to slow down in obedience / agreement with the law are stopped, issued a ticket and compelled / mandated to pay a fine as a result of their failure to abide by the Law.

Third, by the keeping of God’s law, and through the abundant blessings of the Lord’s provisions, the nation was to be unique among all people groups in the world, and their testimony of the one true God would compel others to desire, know, and serve Him.

The Law, all 613 commands (mitzvot in Hebrew) extracted from the Old Testament, was aimed / pointed at humanity’s inability to conform and obey, bringing them to a place where they could recognize the weakness of their own flesh, their inability to live righteously 24/7, and their need for a faith-based relationship with a force and power greater than themselves and their own spiritual strength and abilities.

“Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith.”

Habakkuk 2:4

We must now inquire of the New Testament to gain a fuller, more complete revelation / understanding!

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.” 

Romans 7:7

For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM.” Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

Galatians 3:10-11

Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Galatians 3:21-22

God never intended for the Old Testament Law to be the universal law for all people, for all of time, by which one could gain / obtain a position of righteousness through the forgiveness / removal of sin!

For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:3-4

Sometimes we, as New Testament believers, get confused by the biblical use of the word “law.” Romans 6:14 declares to all of us … “You are not under law but under grace” … which means we are not burdened by the law as one’s source for earning, gaining, or acquiring forgiveness of sin, salvation, righteousness, and a place in eternity with Christ Jesus.

What if righteousness could come through Law? If righteousness is available through the Law, then Christ became human, suffered, and died needlessly (without purpose / cause … for nothing)!

“I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”                                                                                                                 

Galatians 2:21

Therefore, let us rejoice … my failure and inability to live by the tenants of the Law and upholding every portion of it, has resulted in a God-designed and orchestrated path of forgiveness, salvation, and righteousness, as well as an eternity with the Lord that I could have never acquired or attained on my own!

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

Have you received and accepted the gift of God? It’s time to decide which path you’ll choose!

AI -v- GOD

Soon AI will be viewed as omniscient (all-knowing) and, the way things are progressing, omnipresent (constantly / everywhere present) … then, depending what it is allowed to control, even potentially an element of omnipotence (all powerful). While these are distinctly attributes of the one and only true God, and NEVER allocated as viable attributes to humanity, any life forms, or any created thing, we totter on the precipice of pridefully elevating access to information as a substitute for genuine spiritual understanding and absolute Truth (of which our God is the only proper source). 

One’s own perception and knowledge of AI, as compared to human probabilities and abilities, plays a crucial role in the use and / or dependence (willful / knowingly or unknowingly/ unaware) on AI. Unquestionably, we are connected in some way or in some manner to the broad-reaching tenacles of this technology, which is generally used to automate tasks, make decisions and somehow remarkably impact our everyday lives.  We live in an age where the unimaginable (like out of an old sci-fi movie or series) is not just within our grasp, but the emergence of AI, and its remarkable capabilities, is integrally affecting our world! It fuels our smartphones, empowers smart home devices, enables autonomous vehicles to skirt around neighborhoods and highways, and guides innumerable strategic financial decisions.  AI is not just seemingly everywhere – it’s actively sculpting the shape and intricacies of the future.

Currently, there are questionably, but acknowledged, 4 types of AI:

  1. Reactive Machines – These systems have no lasting memory, but are task specific … an input always delivers the same output. They take customer data, such as a purchase or an individual’s search history, and use it to deliver recommendations back to the customers.
  2. Limited Memory – These systems learn from history (whatever is available) to make choices / decisions.
  3. Theory of Mind (proposed to understanding and beliefs about the world, with the ability to interact socially, emotionally with / like humans) – Some experts say this doesn’t exist yet.
  4. Self-Aware – The ultimate stage of AI development. This type of AI system is aware of the world around it in such a way that it can understand, interpret, and predict human emotions and act / respond accordingly.

AI is undoubtedly transforming industries, from healthcare to finance, and revolutionizing the way humanity tackles problems and makes decisions! When AI is employed as a helpful tool, one might be fully inclined to accept it without any apprehension or concern.  However, when AI starts assuming roles typically handled by humans on a spiritual, psychological, or even an emotional level, it will ultimately lead to a sense of detachment from spiritual intimacy, from a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ, and subjugate one’s dependence of the absolute truth of God’s Word and the direction of God’s Holy Spirit.

The untethered influence and habitual use of AI, which is becoming increasingly sophisticated and pervasive, will work to make one question their uniqueness as a human being, their individual spiritual gifting, and challenge one’s one dependence and connection to a living, all powerful, all knowing, ever-present supreme/ superior being … Jehovah ‘Elyown (Psalm 83:18 – Lord Most High), El-Shaddai (Exodus  6:3 – God Almighty).

A few weeks ago, I warned the congregation about the invasiveness of AI and its influence in the ministries of Christ’s Church from sermons to counseling, music and worship, to prayers . . . bots in the pulpit!  Today, I’m appealing to you, as your pastor (an under shepherd of Christ), one who will ultimately have to give an account for your soul according to Hebrews 13:17 . . . either be or become alert!

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.”

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.    

1 Thessalonians 5:4-8

In context of Christ’s imminent return, which we daily anticipate . . .

“Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly  like a trap; for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. “But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Luke 21:34-36

Brothers and sisters, I can’t make us wake up, I can’t make anyone become dependent on God’s Word and the direction / leadership of His Holy Spirit.  However, I can warn, like the watchman on the tower in Ezekiel 33:1-9 (check it out). That’s my job, but each of you have a responsibility as well. 

Jesus Christ, while ministering on earth, challenged us spiritually in Matt. 6:22-23:

“The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

We are children of light (Ephesians 5:7-16, Matthew 5:13-16), we’ve been removed from the kingdom of darkness, and supernaturally transferred to Christ’s Kingdom (Colossians 1:13-14, I Peter 2:9). Therefore, let us live and walk in the Light of Christ, God’s Holy Spirit, and His Word, rather than the darkness of this world which is currently being disguised as omniscient and omnipresent for humanity’s benefit and blessing! There is only one True God — so listen carefully and follow Him steadfastly!

A NATION UNDER GOD

A little over a half century ago, at the height of anti-Communist fervor, Congress added the words “under God” to our Pledge of Allegiance in an attempt to link patriotism and religion, clearly distinguishing the United States of America from its number one cold war enemy, those “godless” Soviets!  Now, over the years, and after many repetitive declarations, this phrase has become part of American life, just like the words ”In God We Trust” on our coins and ”God bless America” uttered by presidential candidates and politicians at the end of important speeches. 

However, in June of 2002, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in California ruled 2 to 1 that those words in our pledge violate the First Amendment, which says that ”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”  The majority sided with Michael Newdow, who complained that his daughter was injured when forced to listen to public school teachers lead students daily in a pledge that includes the assertion that there is a God.  However, the assertion “under God” is not a violation of the First Amendment establishment clause as some have suggested. 

While this case, and others like it are way off the radar screen in the pantheon of First Amendment cases that have followed, no one really wants to honestly consider the lie and/or religion that’s perpetuated if “under God” is disallowed or removed.  What are the impending consequences for a nation/people who willfully and purposefully refuse to acknowledge its/their appointed, preordained position, place, standing, rank, or status?  The wisest man in the world clearly expresses God’s heart on this issue in Proverbs 14:34:

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

Certainly it’s sin . . . absolute rebellion, for a nation or people to decide they are not “under God.”  God’s prophet, Isaiah was told to, “Cry loudly” against such people, “Do not hold back; Raise your voice like a trumpet and declare to My people their transgression.” (See Isaiah 58:1)  In contrast, the nation of Israel was instructed by the Lord in Deuteronomy 28:1-2:

Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God.

Ultimately every believer, and in reality, every American, must both ask and answer questions concerning the reason/purpose for this nation’s initial formation and continued existence, and in so doing must incontestably recognize:      

1)   God raised up Israel to be a witness to the world of the one true and living God. 

Deuteronomy 4:6-8 – So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him? Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

2)   God establishes and removes nations according to His will/purposes. 

      Daniel 2:21 – It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.

      Acts 17:26 – And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation.

      Romans 13:1 – For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

3)   God, in His sovereign dominion governs and convenes over all nations and people.   

      Psalm 22:28 – For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations.

     Psalms 47:8 – “God reigns over the nations, God sits on His holy throne.

Psalms 66:6 – He rules by His might forever; His eyes keep watch on the nations; Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.

      Psalms 82:8 – Arise, O God, judge the earth! For it is You who possesses all the nations.

Therefore as we approach the birthday of our “One nation under God”, please dutifully consider, as David Manuel and Peter Marshall asked in their book,  “The Light And The Glory” (a must read for every true Christian in America), “Did God have a plan for America?”  If yes, was it to be free people “under God” who would boldly share/shine His light/truth and bring Him honor/glory?  If one answers yes to that, then honestly contemplate the state of our nation.  Have we receded, becoming as those mentioned in Psalms 135:15?

The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, the work of man’s hands.

As we celebrate our nation and freedom this July 4th, may we as one nation acknowledge our exact and proper position/place/standing/rank/status under the one true God while never forgetting the warning and promise found in Jeremiah 18:7-10!

At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it;  if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it. Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it;  if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it.

AMERICA

Some familiar words from one of our most popular patriotic songs . . .   

America! America! God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

In the refrain above, one sings of God’s grace being poured out, or “shed” on America.  Undoubtedly this has been true throughout certain periods of our incredible history and undeniably, according to the scripture (See Daniel 2:21, Acts 17:26), this nation was birthed and exists to glorify the Lord.  When our Lord formed and raised up the nation of Israel as a witness to the world of the One True God, He Himself declared:

So keep and do them (the Lord’s commands), for that is your wisdom and your understanding in sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’  For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him?  Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

While we, as believers and Americans, fully understand that this scripture refers specifically to the Hebrew people as they walked in obedience, the underlying spiritual principle remains true for any and every nation that understands their formation was by Him, and their very existence is perpetuated according to His ultimate plan and purpose.  Thus, the admonition of Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people (people group, culture, nation, etc.),” remains distinctly true for us in America today, as well as for every nation currently functioning on our planet. 

However, there is one great distinction that exquisitely, yet blatantly and irrefutably appears in the formation of these United States …the biblically-based faith of our nation’s founders and the influence of those beliefs upon the design, development, and organization of this great land. 

While certainly the structure wasn’t (and still isn’t) perfect, and obviously reflected several human flaws such as those of slavery and women’s rights, the understanding of it’s imperfection was undoubtedly a divinely inspired building block offering opportunities for spiritual development.                                          

America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!

Today in our somewhat hostile environment towards anything labeled Christian (admitably not that everything labeled Christian is biblical Christianity), many choose to argue, or attempt to refute in ignorance the simple facts, the overwhelming, absolutely undeniable evidence, that a firm belief in one true God and Jesus Christ as redeemer of mankind provided an unyielding and stable foundation for our nation’s then inventive and resourceful paradigm of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness, And ev’ry gain divine!

When it comes to America, I’m always drawn to topics of study that include the concepts of both  political and spiritual liberty/freedom.  That’s primarily due to the fact that political freedom can only be achieved and maintained in a society that experiences spiritual freedom, and has been liberated from the holds and bondage of sin’s separation from God, and its consequential spiritual depravity, destruction, and death.  Therefore, consider these irrefutable words that provide unambiguous transparency and obvious, comprehensible evidence of our forefathers’ persevering convictions and biblicaly-based faith!

… with firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor. — The Declaration of Independence

We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.  Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. SHIELD

Many forms of weaponry are mentioned throughout the biblical text. While some are employed for defensive measures, and others are primarily used for offense, a few are used to demonstrate God’s character and help believers understand the significance of His power, His Word, and His Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives.

Consider the reference to shields found in the scripture. One is the Hebrew word, “tsinnah,” a large heavy shield designed to protect and guard the whole body. You may recall that in the case of Goliath, his shield was actually even carried by another person. The second shield is the Hebrew word, “maghen,” which was a much smaller device used by groups of soldiers that had to move quickly like archers, cavalry, and those in close combat situations. Figuratively, these shields illustrate God’s protection, God’s truth, and His provision of salvation. Psalm 18:30 speaks clearly of our Lord’s continuous and inexorable protection:

As for God, His way is blameless; the word of the LORD is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

A third shield, the Greek word “thureos” is introduced by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:16 which is familiar to most believers.

“In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

This reference describes a Roman or Greek shield regularly used by an attacking or besieging army to defend themselves against arrows, flaming arrows, darts, stones, and flaming touches launched mechanically or thrown by those being besieged (the defenders).

In this consideration, the New Testament shield, while used to protect the individual soldier, was an essential and critical tool used during an advancing army’s assault on the enemy. Spiritually speaking, we often discuss the divinely empowered weapons of our warfare, yet fail to identify this portion of God’s armor as part of an offensive strategy. In fact we put on the whole armor of God to go out offensively and defeat the enemy! God’s armor is for advancing – for assaulting and attacking the enemy. We are not to be found sitting back, hoping and praying that our defensive positions will hold. Successful spiritual warfare means going after the enemy – moving forward with an offensive assault.

According to II Corinthians 10:4, aren’t we are called to “the destruction of fortresses?” How does one destroy the fortresses of our enemy without launching an assault or attack on those fortresses? God’s armor is provided for the battles we must fight, and every piece is essential for victory.

A soldier with a very sharp and effective sword still needs the protection that the armor provides. In fact, it would be foolish for one of God’s soldiers to enter the battle without the proper protective gear and a sharp, effective, offensive weapon. The Sword of God’s Spirit which is the Word of God must be wielded in battle to overcome and defeat the enemy, but just imagine the casualties, the body count, if there was no faith in Christ/God, no Shield of Faith, and no protection for the saints.

Imagine yourself, out on the battlefield, engaging in combat, attacking the enemy, standing firm on the ground you’ve gained, yet you’ve failed to “put on the full armor of God!” (See Ephesians 6:11) Wonder how long one could survive?

ABBA

In Romans 8:15, the Apostle Paul employs a Hebraic-Chaldaic word for “Father” to help believers understand their freedom in Christ and their current relationship with God. In ancient Jewish households, the servants and slaves were never permitted to address the head of the household in the same manner as those belonging to that household either by blood or by legal adoption. Descendants and legal adoptees could, and would properly address their Father as “ABBA,” a word corresponding to our “Daddy” or “Papa.” In the time of Christ, and the New Testament era, “ABBA” was commonly used in a child’s life, from infancy on, as an expression of warm, genuine affection and supreme confidence. Sadly, there is no perfect equivalent in our English language.

In Mark 14:36, Christ uses “Abba,” crying out to His Father in genuine affection and supreme confidence when declaring, “All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.” Therefore, the right to call God “Abba” (Father) is a special privilege afforded to only a few, those, to whom by relationship have been granted that right. That’s why Paul uses this very specific word and terminology in Romans 8:15 – “For you (true believers) have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we (can and are privileged to) cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’”

Further explanation of this concept is offered in Galatians 4:6-7 – “Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son (Jesus Christ) into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” Therefore you are no longer a slave (or servant who cannot and should not address the Father), but a son; and if a son, then an heir (joint heir with all His other children and Jesus Christ) through God.

Christ offers additional reinforcement concerning our liberty and position when, immediately after His resurrection, He addresses Mary Magdalene in John 20:18 saying, “Go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” Christ’s Father is my Father too — Christ’s God is my God too — What a deal! What a privilege, what an honor! A slave or servant lives under constant fear and alarm. But we live in freedom and confidence as His children. The spirit of adoption brings the assurance – because you were adopted (picked, chosen) – accompanied by feelings of affection, love, and confidence which as children, looking to any goodly father, not the servile, trembling spirit of slaves. Adoption requires taking and treating a stranger as one’s own child. It is applied to Christians because God treats us as His own, and receives us into relationship, though in the natural, we would be/feel as strangers and enemies in that relationship.

  1. By nature we have no position.
  2. God’s act towards us is one of kindness, of pure, sovereign love.
  3. Now we are under his protection and care.
  4. Now, we as His children, bear His image and character, and yield to Him through our obedience.
  5. Now we express toward Him the feelings due to a Father.
  6. Now we can call upon Him; addressing Him in the language of affection and endearing confidence, seeking His protection and assistance in all things.

VISION II

Last week, I challenged every believer to recognize the need for and the power of “vision;” vision from God in their individual lives, family, and ministry; by reflecting on some principles revealed in the first few chapters of Nehemiah. His life was dynamically changed and impacted by his willingness to; 1) believe God, 2) embrace God’s vision, 3) actively participate in the vision, and 4) pass it on to God’s people. Nehemiah provides an excellent example for every believer as God entrusts him (as He does us) with many opportunities. His clarity of vision, commitment, and faith is directly linked to success —

“The God of heaven will give us success (after all, it’s His purpose and vision conveyed to His people for His glory and their blessing/benefit); therefore we His servants (God’s athletes, builders, stewards, soldiers, workmen) will arise (by faith – trust and obey) and build, but you (cynics and hecklers) have no portion, right, or memorial in Jerusalem.”

As with any true vision from God, Nehemiah faced opposition and attacks from the enemy. That’s true in our lives as well. If God is with you, and for you, you can usually count on someone or something rising-up against you, even though the enemy is powerless against the hand of our Lord! Nehemiah faced overt opposition numerous times in Chapters 4-6:14.

In Chapter 4, the initial attack comes from those on the outside, who openly ridicule the Jewish people, their abilities, craftsmanship, and even their God. Tobiah says, “What they are building – if a fox should jump/climb upon it, he will break their stone wall down.” I find it interesting that this cynic/heckler can make this statement without even evaluating the wall, its design or structural integrity! Nehemiah and God’s people simply cry out to God concerning this attack (vs. 4-5) and continue steadfast and immovable with their faith and trust in God – “So we built the wall and the whole wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work!”

Next, the enemies of God’s people form an allegiance and threaten to launch a military campaign against Jerusalem which is intended as a distraction to ultimately stop the wall reconstruction project. Once again, God’s people “prayed” (vs9), however they were also compelled (by God’s Holy Spirit as he directed Nehemiah) to post guards and develop military strategies to effectively respond to an enemy attack (vs. 13-23). It’s interesting how forces which normally can’t agree on anything, unite together against a common enemy -– in this case the work of God.

Christ experienced the Pharisees, Sadducees, and other Jewish leaders (Sanhedrin & Chief Priests– who disagreed and constantly fought with each other over spiritual and political issues) coming together in unity, jointly conspiring to eliminate Jesus Christ, as well as Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead (John 11:45-12:11). As believers, we must recognize, and stand firm against, the “schemes (devices/wiles) of the devil” (Eph. 6:11) who is a thief and a liar. We must prepare and post our guards while continuing the work, being adequately equipped in the full armor of God!

The next difficulty faced by Nehemiah (Chapter 5) comes from within, as God’s people fail to live righteously and violate one another by refusing to honor the truths and values established in God’s Word. Satan’s obvious attempt is to stir up strife and divide the body. Many, many times, the enemy is given a foothold in an effective ministry or church, simply because God’s people fail to obey the Word in dealing with one another. This sin was a form of extortion, “Exacting usury each from his brother” (vs7). In verse 6 we learn that this injustice makes Nehemiah “very angry” and according to God’s wisdom and instruction he institutes complete economic reform which brings relief for God’s people.

Nehemiah faces three more onslaughts from the enemy in Chapter 6. The first is through compromise, when Sanballat and Geshem try to set up a meeting with Nehemiah in the “plain of Ono” to talk things over. I love Nehemiah’s response in verses 3-4 as he says O NO, “Why should the work (of God) stop” for me to come down and meet with you? Once again God’s Spirit is directing Nehemiah because they were planning to “do Him harm” (vs2). In verses 5-9 the enemy tries slander against Nehemiah, but his character is true and he trusts God to defend his name.

Next the enemy conspired to entrap Nehemiah (vs10-14) but once again, God’s Holy Spirit leads Nehemiah, providing discernment, and he remains above reproach. You may recall several attempts like this made against Christ in the Gospels. Nehemiah and God’s people find victory, triumph, and success – the wall is completed in 52 days (vs15) and the enemy was completely defeated (vs16)! This type of conquest requires faith, discipline, hard work, and commitment. But, without a clear vision, the project could have been delayed or even dismantled by the enemy’s attacks. Nehemiah continued steadfast, refusing to be sidetracked, and resisting every form of attack (“Resist the devil and he will flee”).

How often is the enemy successful not because we fall into some gross sin, but simply because we get sidetracked and fail to achieve the vision(s) and life purpose(s) God has entrusted to us? Can we trust and obey our Lord, Jesus Christ, believing He wants to accomplish His vision(s) and purpose(s) in us and through us, both personally and as a body, united together in the ministry of West Oaks Fellowship?

REFORMATION

While this word doesn’t appear in our Bibles, it is a very important word within the framework of New Testament Christianity, meaning, “the action or process of reforming an institution or practice.”

On October 31, 1517, a significant event took place for all believers, and it wasn’t Halloween! A dynamic protest was birthed – Reformation Day — which commemorates what was perhaps one of the greatest moves of God’s Holy Spirit since the works of the Apostles in Christ’s first century Church. So one asks, “What is the significance of Reformation Day?” 

At that time, few would have suspected that the sound of a hammer striking the castle church door in Wittenberg, Germany would soon be heard distinctly, and ultimately lead to the greatest transformation of Western society since the Apostles first preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the Roman empire. Martin Luther’s nailing of his “Ninety-Five Theses” to the church door provoked a debate that culminated in what we now call the Protestant (Protest) Reformation.

Initially protesting the Pope’s attempt to sell salvation, Luther’s continual (unrelenting search for truth) study of Scripture soon led him to oppose the church of Rome on issues including the authority and supremacy of the Bible over church tradition, as well as the means by which an individual becomes righteous in the sight of God.

Though clearly declared throughout the New Testament, and found in the writings of many of our early church fathers, the medieval Roman Catholic bishops and priests had largely forgotten the truth that one’s own good works cannot/will not gain God’s favor. Salvation is by grace alone (Sola Gratia), through faith alone (Sola Fide), in Christ alone (Solus Christus / Solo Christo).

A believer’s good works are a result of his/her faith, not a means by which one obtains salvation/redemption and/or the forgiveness of sin. (See Ephesians 2:8-10). One’s justification (God’s declaration of … “not guilty”) and righteousness in His sight, comes through faith, by which the Father imputes or reckons to a true believer’s account — the perfect righteousness of Christ Jesus!

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Martin Luther’s rediscovery of this truth led to a whole swarm of other church and societal reforms … reformation. Much of what we, as believers, take for granted in today’s churches would have likely been impossible had he never studied the scriptures diligently, and then fervently protested! Luther’s translation of the Bible into German put the Word of God in the hands of the common people — a language they could clearly understand. This reformed the Latin church mass by putting the liturgy into a common tongue, allowing non-scholars to actually hear and understand the teaching and preaching of God’s Word. Worship also experienced complete reformation … God’s people could now sing with clarity, songs with words and meanings the congregation could fully embrace/comprehend.

Luther also lifted the unbiblical ban on marriage for the clergy, and by his own teaching and example radically transformed the concept of church ministry as well as the institution itself. In addition, Luther’s protests recaptured the biblical concepts concerning the priesthood of each and every follower of Jesus Christ.

We should all understand and gratefully consider the importance of the Protestant (Protest) Reformation. May we equip ourselves to be knowledgeable proclaimers and defenders of biblical truth, eager to boldly proclaim the Gospel of Christ, thereby sparking a new reformation for Christ’s 21st century church and our culture.  Isn’t it about time and desperately needed?
