“LAW”

Last Friday evening at our Digging Deeper Home Fellowship (4 regular participants were out, 15 present) I posed a question like this:

“If you are working with others to form a new nation and are asked to write the laws for your new country, what laws would you establish?”

The answers were extremely varied, but as you can easily imagine, some ideas were pretty consistent, such as: no murder, no theft, as well as freedom of speech, assembly, and worship. However, some were quite challenging and a few truly intriguing, like:

Public transparency in governmental spending.
Regulations concerning pets.
Illegal resident regulations.
Rights of self-defense as well as for family and property.
Two years mandatory military service.
Mandatory school attendance.
No daylight savings time.
Justice without prejudice.
Preserve / protect / honor humanity.
Care for veterans.
Checks and balances for governmental leaders.

Due to the fact that our home fellowship is a group of committed believers, the concepts of honoring, loving, and serving the Lord, as well as loving one’s neighbor were generally included, as were a few references to the 10 commandments. However, one individual wrote out only 4 laws for the new nation:

#1 “Jesus is Lord.”

#2 “All men and women are created equal, + all are sinners in need of salvation that only Jesus can secure.”

#3 “There are only 2 sexes, male and female as each is created by God.”

#4 “Marriage is between one woman and one man.”

WOW, these are all biblically-based (God’s) Truths, irrespective of the Mosaic Law and our current nation, and perhaps even a majority of individuals in our nation have abandoned such antiquated ideas. This may actually fully explain the current condition of our nation! The simple, yet profound abandonment of GOD!

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”

That evening, after outlining 7 reasons for God’s Law as presented to Moses for the Hebrew people, I asked this important question,

“OF WHAT VALUE ARE A NATION’S LAWS THAT EXCLUDE OR ELIMINATE THE VALUES OF GOD?”

Today, we need to ask that question as it relates to our own individual lives as well as that of our nation, because the Law of Moses was originally given to regulate / govern their society and reveal / expose humanity’s sin.

The apostle Paul shares his experience with the law in Romans 7:7-8.

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.”

Paul was able to identify his own sin because God have given a law to his people!

While we are not spiritual legalists, since we have been set free from the law of sin and death through Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2, Titus 2:14), nonetheless, a lawless (unregulated – concerning right and wrong) life and a lawless (unregulated – concerning right and wrong) nation is extremely destructive and tremendously dangerous! There must be a “rule of law” that upholds a biblical standard of truth, and identifies, as well as enforces, concepts of right and wrong.

“Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.”

“But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.”

Sadly, lawlessness prevails in our current nation and throughout our world.

Even though we have a promise of a different nation where righteousness prevails 24 / 7, in the interest of our children, our children’s children, Christ’s Church and the USA, will you meditate on our condition, live righteously, share your faith, and humbly pray for the Lord God Almighty to extend His powerful hand of renewal (perhaps complete reformation) and restoration?

“The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.”

ONE BODY

In June of 1985, 12 young people (mostly early 30’s or younger) sat in a living room, all pretty hurt and confused by the situations at our church, and reluctantly decided it would be best to form a new church. At that moment, we had hoped to be an outreach mission of our former church, and had no idea we wouldn’t be a member of the Southern Baptist denomination.

As things evolved, neither of those falsely presumed opportunities played out, which kind of left us hanging out on a limb.

We all knew the scriptures pretty well, and fully understood that the Baptist Church we were involved in wasn’t operating scripturally, but on the other hand, due to our Baptist heritage, had no real idea about being an independent, New Testament-based body of believers.

That reality forced us to dive deeper into God’s Word / Truth, longing for clarification and understanding to answer the question, “What is a New Testament Church and how should it operate?” We wrote letters to many churches (this was way before easy access web pages) asking them to share their doctrinal and organizational documents. In addition, for the next six months, mainly on Wednesday nights and Sunday evenings, we studied the biblical text alongside the documents provided by other ministries. We even actually discouraged other people from coming, stating that we didn’t know … have a clue … what we were going to do, and what the forming of a biblically-based New Testament Church actually looked like, and we certainly had no vision of becoming multi-ethnic as we are today!

We learned:

Sharing / Speaking the Truth (God’s Word) in Love should be at the very foundation of the new ministry.

Ephesians 4:14-16

That people, by considering the ministry of Jesus Christ, were more important than programs.

1 Corinthians 12:14-19

That we needed proper, biblically-qualified and spiritual leadership to serve Christ’s Church in biblically-defined roles.

Titus 1:6-9; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; 1 Timothy 3:8-13; 1 Peter 4:10-11

That the praise and worship of Jesus Christ, combined with ministry to / for one another, was absolutely essential, even though it was quite difficult to find a functioning scriptural model for us to emulate.

Psalm 34:1-3; Romans 12:10-13; Romans 12:15-16; Romans 15:7-8; Philippians 2:1-4; James 5:16

Needless to say, over the last 39 years, it has been difficult to stay focused and remain on path, and I have failed time and time again to keep things moving in the right direction. As I look back, perhaps the hardest years were those that hopefully have just passed – with the COVID issues, along with people leaving and, completely contrary to the scriptures (Hebrews 10:23-25), deciding that being connected to and active in a church body (attending worship services and fellowship opportunities) is not important … devaluing some of the very reasons Christ established His Church. It’s truly heartbreaking to see individuals become less and less connected, eventually just removing themselves from being a vital part of the body’s function, which actually causes every other member of the body to suffer and struggle a little.

Certainly, our church body is not perfect, nor are the humans (all of us, including the ministerial staff) perfect, but that doesn’t excuse or exempt us from attempting to function according to Christ’s design as a legitimate New Testament Church, founded and operating on that foundation without reference to various forms of denominationalism and / or religion.

Therefore, I really, genuinely need and fully appreciate your prayers and faithful support. WOF must maintain its course! To do that we must uphold, as absolutely essential, the parameters originally established at our inception, while embracing the need for reaching and training faithful individuals who are committed to growing in Christ, and whole-heartedly yielding (no matter what our world says or promotes), respecting and honoring the adherence to biblically-qualified leadership who will sacrificially serve Christ and His church.

Over the last couple of years, months, and even weeks, our Lord has brought new believers into our body, which is really encouraging. With that in mind and the opportunity that presents, we must as “one body” move forward once again (in year 39) in complete, unhesitant, and over-flowing response to Christ’s imperative command of making disciples (and disciple makers) from His declaration in Matthew 28:19-20!

MERCY

The Lord God does not owe us anything! While it is certainly true that God is good, that doesn’t imply or mandate, as some false teachers would promote, that we, as sinful, rebellious humanity, rightfully deserve anything from HIM, a holy and righteous Lord! However, every day that one lives is actually an act of God’s mercy!

Lamentations 3:22-23 declares,

The Lord’s lovingkindnesses (mercy in the Hebrew text) indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

Accordingly, our Lord has an inexhaustible abundance of mercy that “never” ceases! Genuine (biblical) mercy is not what’s merited, but God functioning in His kindness and compassion toward humankind contrary to what is properly and rightfully deserved.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:4-7

As an effect and result of the divine attribute … His “rich” mercy … grace (an undeserved/unearned gift of God’s favor) is bestowed as the Apostle Paul clearly and profoundly articulates.

Even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor … Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 1:13-14

While mercy and grace are often connected spiritually, and regularly confused or treated similarly by many believers, they are definitely not the same, and for proper biblical understanding, their meanings should not be casually or intentionally interchanged. In the Scriptures (biblical text), mercy is often equated to deliverance from judgment (see Deuteronomy 4:30–31) … “Mercy triumphs over judgement” (James 2:13) … while grace is always the extending of a blessing to the non-deserving / unworthy.

In Psalm 51:1–2, after being confronted by the Prophet Nathan, King David cries out to the Lord, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” Pleading for mercy is asking the Lord to show His loving-kindness and to withhold whatever judgment is deserved.

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

ENSAMPLE

This is not a common word for us in our everyday reading or communication; however, it holds a very significant meaning in our New Testament Scriptures. You may recall that recently, on Sunday, July 23, 2023, when we honored Dr. Joe Wall, we carefully and very distinctly used that word on the plaque we presented him.

Some modern translations use the word “pattern,” which serves the appropriate textual purpose and meaning decently, but is perhaps still a little lacking. The ASV (American Standard), and KJV (King James), seem to hold the line on “ensample.” Weaker translations all seem to use example for the purpose of modern-day vernacular, which fails to convey the deep spiritual concepts of the original Greek root word, tupos; translated as ensample.

Tupos (Gk) primarily denotes “a blow” (from a root tup—, seen also in tupto, “to strike”), hence, a serious impression — the mark made from a powerful blow as a permanent scar. It can also refer to a dye – that’s as in a coin or ancient stamp. You may recall from John 20:25, that the disciple Thomas demanded to, “see in His (Jesus Christ) hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side.”

Then in Romans 6:17 we find this word used in reference to the teaching that believers were charged to become obedient unto.

Consider the Apostle Paul’s instruction to us in Philippians 3:17, “Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern (Gk – tupos; ensample – that permanent blow / strike of transformation that occurs only in and through an unrelenting faith and commitment to Christ as one’s own master) you have in us.” In 2 Thessalonians 3:9, the church is instructed to follow the Apostle’s “pattern” (tupos) of life discipline. Unquestionably again, this is due to the stamp of Christ alive in him, therefore making him an appropriate “ensample” in the lives of anyone committed to the Lord.

Then in 2 Peter 2:6, the imprint is extremely dramatic / dynamic as the Apostle Peter employs this word, desiring this stamp, this scar to have a lasting testimony upon all who refuse the truth … “And if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter!” There’s a lasting imprint!

Dr. Joe Wall was a “ensample” to me, almost from the very beginning of the ministry back in 1985. I sincerely pray / hope that concept can / will be true for all of us as well! May we demonstrate life with the Word and God’s Holy Spirit freely flowing from within, and then flowing out to those the Lord has uncoincidentally placed in our lives and across our paths.

“In all things show yourself to be an example (ensample) of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.”   -- Titus 2:7-8

BELIEVE

In Acts 16 one finds Paul and Silas ministering the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the community of Thyatira. However, they have been tossed into jail by local magistrates for disrupting some of the town’s commerce when they cast a demon out of a female fortune-teller who was hindering them. According to the biblical text (Acts 16:24) they were placed in the inner prison and their feet were secured in stocks.

Then around midnight (Acts 16:25), while they were praying and singing praises, a great earthquake causes the foundation of the prison to shake (Acts 16:26) and amazingly all doors are opened and everyone’s shackles are unfastened. Needless to say, at that point it’s only logical that all the prisoners would have escaped, but not in this case, instead they all stay, which ultimately saves the life of the jailer (Acts 16:27). Acts 16:28-30 reveals what happened next:

But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!’ And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and after he brought them out, he said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Isn’t it incredible how the Lord literally moves heaven and earth to bring one soul … one family, into His Kingdom! Notice their clear answer to the jailer’s question in Acts 16:31:

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

The directive is, “Believe in the Lord Jesus” … it’s simple and to the point, only requiring a genuine belief/faith in one thing/person, Jesus Christ! There are no, ZERO, conditions attached!

The Greek word for “believe” used in this passage, “pisteuo” (pronounced – pist-yoo’-o), means to fully commit, put in trust with, to have faith in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing. By implication, in this case, it means to fully (whole-heartedly) entrust one’s spiritual well-being to Christ!

But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART” — that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” — Romans 10:6-13

Ever since SALVATION IN CHRIST ALONE came into view, humans have attempted to add something of individual merit to the process without understanding that this approach takes away from the completed work of Jesus Christ. This methodology actually denies the teaching of Christ Himself, the apostles, Christ’s early church, and the revelation of Scripture! In Acts 15:11, after a hearty debate concerning salvation and the part that the “Law of Moses” should play in the conversion of Jews and non-Jews/Gentiles, our early church leaders boldly declared:

We believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.

However, here is the persisting problem — salvation doesn’t come by simply stating, “I believe Jesus.” James reminds us that one does well to believe, but according to 2:19 … “the demons also believe, and shudder.” Genuine salvation is placing your full faith/trust in Jesus Christ. When that occurs, a process of spiritual transformation begins which makes one’s belief and/or faith in Jesus Christ absolutely and undeniably evident. According to James 2:18-20 the works of one’s living faith becomes obviously apparent (dynamically observable)! I John 5:1-10 speaks of such undeniable proof … true believers love God, love other believers, follow the Lord’s commandments, overcome the world (its philosophies, lies and fleshly passions), and possess an inner testimony of our Lord’s work that ultimately shines forth from within the heart and soul of Christ’s faithful.

As one looks further into this matter of believing, genuine salvation, and understanding who is a true believer, Hebrews 12:4-11 cannot be ignored. Our Lord is faithful to discipline those He loves for their own benefit (eventual blessing), as well as in accordance with His definitive and decisive plan/purpose. Unquestionably, if one isn’t receiving discipline, then no relationship exists according to Hebrews 12:7:

For what son (child/heir) is there whom his father does not discipline?

Certainly other spiritual qualities confirm one’s position in Christ such as the indwelling presence and abiding power of God’s Holy Spirit in causing believers to bear fruit (John 15:1-11), equipping them with spiritual gifts for service in His Body (Romans 12:3-8), providing supernatural manifestations (I Corinthians 12:7-11), and the substantiating Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25).

Please hear the essential, indispensable questions: Are these qualities/traits yours and are they ever increasing as you live a life of faith (trusting and relying/believing in/on Jesus Christ)? (II Peter 3:4-11) As the Lord’s people, are we laying aside every encumbrance, the sin that so easily entangles us and running with endurance the race He has set before us with our eyes fixed upon Jesus? (Hebrews 12:1-2) If not, isn’t it time to truly, (full-heartedly) believe? Call upon the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ and experience His abundant mercy and grace, then the transformation will begin and you’ll never wonder again if you’re truly saved because the evidence will be apparent, noticeable by you and others as well!

Just do it!

MISSION TRIP 2014 PART I

As you’re reading this article, we have only 20 weeks (or less, depending on delivery date) to prepare for Mission Trip 2014. While this annual event is a huge undertaking for a ministry our size and arduous to plan and administer, every year we see untold blessings beyond anything that can be measured, valued, or even imagined from a human view-point/perspective.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
— Ephesians 3:20-21

Similar to last year, we’ve been invited to Lyford/Sebastian, Texas by the superintendent of schools (a faithful believer) with the full endorsement of the community, local school board, and administration/personnel. Praise be to God for the way He continually opens doors and provides unique opportunities for all those willing to accept the challenge of boldly and sacrificially serving Him without consideration of their own personal comfort, blessing, and/or benefit (in many cases, even the loss of income for our independent contractors and small business owners).

For the love of Christ controls (urges/compels – presses on us from all sides, holding us to one end and prohibiting us from considering any other, wrapping itself around us in tenderness, giving us an impelling motive) us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

Last year, our first time in Lyford/Sebastian, was a great success with attendance far above expectations and many decisions for Christ. In addition, everyone in the area was delighted with our ministry, as well as our friendly, encouraging, exciting, yet non-compromising, distinctively evangelical outreach to the children and youth in the community. As in former locations (other South Texas communities where we’ve ministered to children and youth), we worked diligently to establish a good reputation with the local businesses, all community leaders, and the parents of the children who participated in our community-wide VBS ministry.

Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.

Generally, our goals remain the same (listed below), however, this year we will need even more involvement from those at WOF who cannot come and the active participation of our teenagers’ parents as we prepare them for this year’s mission. I’m praying that whether one goes or not, it’s still your mission trip … that everyone at WOF has a part in this incredible undertaking. Certainly prayer is always at the top of the list, along with significant financial support/scholarships/donations and fundraising efforts/ideas are absolutely essential and greatly appreciated. However, this year we will be asking for your help, from time-to-time, in many ways.

Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality. For I testify that according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord, begging us with much urging for the favor of participation in the support of the saints, and this, not as we had expected, but they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God.

– MISSION TRIP 2014 – OUR PURPOSE –

Introduce children & youth to Jesus Christ! We strategically plan to provide every child with an opportunity to experience Christ’s love, coming to know forgiveness of sin and salvation that He alone offers. See I Timothy 2:3-7

Provide opportunity for WOF’s youth and young adults, as well as those from other churches, to participate in a meaningful, life-changing ministry event where they are the Lord’s primary ministers/servants. See I Timothy 4:12

Assist other churches/ministries in their efforts to reach a community with Christ’s message of grace and forgiveness. See Romans 16:1-2

Provide a unique opportunity for WOF youth to serve and minister alongside youth from other churches/ministries. See Psalm 33:1

See the purposes of God accomplished as both youth and adult believers work together in unity. See John 17:22-23

Lyford/Sebastian, Texas is a field white unto harvest. May we lift up our eyes and look … seeing the opportunity afforded us as a church/ministry.

In Luke 10:2-3, Jesus said to His disciples:

The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

Perhaps He is speaking to us as well! Certainly we understand this individually in our day-to-day lives, but what about as a church/ministry? Here are two little towns where few have heard the Truth of Christ’s Gospel (His message of grace, love and forgiveness), and we’ve been invited to a harvest. How shall we respond? Shall we heed our Lord’s request? Certainly, our time is now!

AMERICA

When one thinks about America, what pops into your mind? Currently, the greatest nation on earth? What a blessing it is to be an American? The “land of the free” and “the home of the brave?” A nation once again thrown into the divisiveness of minority/equal rights struggles? A country at war with terrorism? A people embattled with economic, health-care, social security, immigration, and defense issues? Perhaps we are seeing what once upon a time may have been referred to as a “Christian” or “Judeo-Christian” America/nation, quickly sinking into the vast cavity and hollowness of pagan secularism.

In addition, while I’m not proposing that these United States of America were ever 100% Christian, nor were its founding fathers all believers in the Jesus Christ of the Bible, or our faith and practice, unquestionably these brave individuals were influenced by a both a belief in deity and fear/respect of Almighty God! Nonetheless, in these latter times of the “Information Age,” is it possible that our nation’s obsession and quest for data, digital communication, and information has actually exalted itself above a need/desire for God? In II Timothy 3, the scriptures declare that difficult times will come, and thus issue a clear and distinct warning concerning this scenario. All those who choose to listen and truly/faithfully believe, are provided with the Lord’s counsel concerning those who are “lovers of money” and “lovers of self,” that they are, or always will be, “learning and/but (are) never able to come to the knowledge (or understanding) of the truth!” They would rather have gratification and information than become subject to the transformation of our Lord and the presence/indwelling of His Holy Spirit!

Doesn’t all information require proper sorting and thorough sifting before it can be effectively applied to any situation? As faithful believers, we must, “take every thought captive” (II Corinthians 10:5-6) by applying the discerning and discriminating filter of God’s Holy Word/Truth to each and every slice of information that comes our way. One might ask, “Exactly how does one select information and use it in the process of personal transformation?” When it comes to a nation, or people group, how does one determine the authenticity and proper value/importance of information, and then select and process pertinent information in order to affect or impact national transformation?

Listed below you’ll find some biblically-based concepts, that if incorporated into your Christian life and that as an American, will help provide some spiritual understanding as we move into the difficulties of serving Christ within the framework of a pagan secular society.

Confront current issues with an eternal perspective (divine viewpoint). (See Colossians 3:1-2)
Move your personal life “from information to transformation (in Christ Jesus) … from rhetoric to righteousness (living righteously)… from finger-pointing and blame-shifting to personal responsibility. (See Titus 2:11-14)
Stop being a labeler . . . we must avoid labeling. Labels have become “libels” (vilifications). (See Ephesians 4:31) They increasingly paralyze relationships, legitimate conversation, communication and the exchange of creative and/or beneficial ideas.
Be committed to the restoration of Biblical/Scriptural authority in every aspect of one’s life. (See II Timothy 3:16-17) It is not talk, but living the truth, which has the potential to restore the foundations of faith and freedom in Christ’s church and our society/nation.
Always remember, we are first Christians! God did not call us to be conservative, liberal or libertarian, but men and women of faith in Jesus Christ and His Word. We must call things as they are (by “The Book”) (See Ephesians 5:25) — not by our political persuasions, political correctness, or in light of our rhetoric defined by any/various label(s).
Never forget, we speak the truth in love when confronting issues, as well as people who disagree with us. (See Philippians 2:3-4) People are sinful and driven by fleshly passion(s) … we all know that! (See Ephesians 2:1-5) Therefore, let us rise above with a proper attitude towards every individual, because every human is created in the image and likeness of God — whether we agree with their lifestyle or not! Our attitude towards the confused, lost, and dying world speaks volumes. (See James 3:8- 18)
We must overturn the rotting logs and mossy rocks that hide our personal sins (See Psalm 32:1-5) as well as those of our nation (See Proverbs 14:34) . . . openly, yet honestly confronting the deepest issues of our society and Americans’ hearts and homes.
Let’s be solution-oriented . . . not just provide tough talk. (See James 2:14-26) Transformation can always occur — even in the toughest and most troubled times! Let’s demonstrate Christian hope and Christ’s healing in our own hearts and homes, as well as for America’s broken families and our nation/society. (See II Timothy 2:23-26)

By employing these concepts and principles, we might just see a genuine transformation.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Certainly, as an American citizen, one has the right to generally say whatever one desires about whomever or whatever one may choose as a right protected by our nation’s constitution. Benjamin Franklin once stated:

Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved and tyranny is erected on its ruins.

However, in March of 2016, a post-grad student at the University of Sheffield was expelled from a college course for making a personal Facebook comment about same sex marriage. Felix Ngole, a committed believer, was found guilty of “bringing the profession into disrepute” because he quoted a biblical text in his post. While we, as American Christians, are indeed empowered to stand against those attempting to make a mockery of our faith and our right to speak openly and freely, we also have a higher mandate and deeper obligation to align ourselves in our personal speech with the truths that we claim to uphold and adhere to in/with our lives.

Unquestionably, Jesus spoke freely concerning truth, whether rightful in the sight of the law, the lawmakers, or the audience. However, His words were always (100%) molded and guided by God’s Holy Spirit … actually being the exact same response that God the Father would have spoken in the same situation. Was He prepared to offend? Surely. God created human beings with the ability to use logic, reason, and participate in forms of argumentation. In fact, many of Christ’s teachings were designed to appeal to these exact traits found within humanity. We are not to be treated as delicate little feathers who must be personally protected from dissenting views.

In reality, there will always be a vocal minority, or in even in some cases, the majority who will oppose almost anything. Some will be totally against truth — anything having to do with God, Christ, or the Bible, as well as any concepts working to distinguish the absolutes of right and wrong, or values and mores of righteous Christian living. Therefore, are believers free to say anything they want about anyone or anything they want, whenever they want? Colossians 4:6 reminds us:

Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.

Actually, at least for me, it’s difficult to combine GRACE (the idea/spirit of unmerited/undeserved favor) with SALT (endurance, offering preservation against corruption, wise, moral value, wholesome, and a lasting or proven worth) as part of the same ideal/concept in my speech … with my words. Yet, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, this is my scriptural admonition.

In the above stated passage, believers are instructed concerning their conversations. The very words that are spoken should both exemplify and recommend the ways of Christ and His word. Let them be not only pure, as well as holy, but wise, gracious, and intelligent. Often a harsh method of defending or proposing sound doctrine and/or a Christian lifestyle only serves to repel individuals from the truth they so desperately need in their lives, including the forgiveness of sin and Christ’s indescribable gift of salvation.

This verse also encourages a judicially managed discourse … “so that you will know how you should respond to each person .” In Acts 17:16-34, the Apostle Paul is ministering at the Areopagus. Instead of using biblical texts and arguments familiar to a monotheistic God-fearing group of native of proselytized Jews, He communicates reasonably, graciously, and persuasively with truth in an uncompromising fashion. However, guided by God’s Holy Spirit, he speaks to a biblically illiterate, pagan audience in a style and with terminology they can fully comprehend. That’s GRACE and SALT!

Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, “We shall hear you again concerning this. Acts 17:32-34

So Paul went out of their midst. But some men joined him and believed.

While most of us find great joy in the liberty we call “freedom of speech” as Americans, it’s difficult to support this concept as a pure “Christian right.” We speak or share the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Christians do not allow their speech cause them to sin (Ecclesiastes 5:6), and in fact, we put aside abusive speech (Colossians 3:8). According to Titus 2:8, believers speak soundly, which is above reproach, and not against one another (James 4:11). It actually all comes down to this from Colossians 3:17:

Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Our freedom of speech, as faithful followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ, is a tremendous blessing and great opportunity of speaking that which glorifies the Lord and is guided/directed by His Holy Spirit in agreement with His word/truth. We are equipped, as no others … just as Christ was while carrying out His mission on earth … just as the Apostle Paul did in Athens, to speak as the utterances of God (I Peter 4:11) in, and to, every situation and circumstance.
