“FAITH OVER FEAR”

In a world increasingly characterized by uncertainties, anxieties from numerous sources, and persistent fears such as global pandemics, economic instability, political corruption, media deception, general turmoil stirred by social media, moral / ethical compromise, and individual / personal challenges, the timeless Biblical concept / principle of “FAITH OVER FEAR” stands as a beacon of strength for us as believers. This phrase should become a rallying cry for each and every faithful follower of Jesus Christ – not just in 2026, but as a deeply embedded lifestyle.

Genuine faith in our sovereign Lord, the God of all the known and unknown throughout the entire creation / universe, is a divinely appointed antidote to the potentially paralyzing grip of human fear. But what does “FAITH OVER FEAR” actually mean from an exclusive biblical perspective? It must rise above, being far more than some catchy promotion slogan or motivational cliché. At its core, this basic biblically based principle represents a fundamental choice that every believer must make daily … an intentional / deliberate decision to trust the Lord God’s character, His promises, and the absolute truth of His providence … rather than surrendering to the worries, concerns / apprehensions, and fears that seek to engage, even controlling, our minds and hearts.

FAITH OVER FEAR requires an anchoring of one’s soul in the unchanging, immutable Truth found only in the Word of God rather than the shifting circumstances and experiences of one’s life. It means believing that Jesus Christ is exactly who and what He says He is … that He will do and accomplish all He has promised to do, and that His purposes for our lives are not only good, but perfect, even when we don’t fully understand them. This means choosing to walk in faithful obedience to God’s Word, the Lord’s callings, and the direction / leadership of His Holy Spirit even when every natural instinct screams at us to shrink back in fear (retreat), hide, or surrender in some mental / emotional compromise.

The Apostle Paul beautifully captures this tension that all believers routinely deal with while encouraging Pastor Timothy to be steadfast and fulfill his ministry / calling / life-purpose in 2 Timothy 1:7!

For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.

This verse reveals that paralyzing fear, as “a spirit of timidity,” can attempt to control, thwart, or even destroy divine purposes! This “spirit of timidity” obviously does not originate from God, as the biblical text clearly states, but instead, the Lord has properly equipped believers with power (dunamis in Greek, from which we get “dynamite”), love (agape, the self-sacrificing, benevolent love that comes from God – 1 John 4:19), and a sound mind (sophronismos, meaning self-discipline / control and sound / good judgment)! These divine endowments purposefully enable believers to continually face our life challenges with spiritual courage and discernment that’s rooted in faith rather than cowering in fear.

Throughout the Scriptures, recurring commands like “Fear not” or “Do not be afraid” appear at least 365 times. (Side note — one for every day of the year, as if God knew we would definitely need this daily reminder). This repetition is not coincidental, but directly reflects God’s understanding of our human nature / weaknesses, and His desire for His children to live an abundant life (John 10:10) in the framework of His freedom with genuine faith, rather than being captivated by one’s worldly fears. Authentic faith in the Lord is designed to overcome any “spirit of timidity!”

Biblical faith is far more than intellectual assent to certain propositions or wishful thinking about particular desired goals / outcomes / objectives. The writer of Hebrews provides us with the description of God-centered / Christ-centered / Word-centered / Truth-centered faith that some might deem as a little confusing.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.

Hebrews 11:1-2

The Greek word for “assurance” (hypostasis) carries the meaning of “confidence” — genuine biblical faith provides reality / substance. Then the word for “conviction” (elenchos) means “evidence” or “proof” — faith provides convincing proof of realities one cannot yet see / experience in the framework of our human understanding. This is exactly how the “men of old gained approval” as exemplified in the balance of Chapter 11.

As one reads through that text, notice this kind of faith is not passive or abstract. It is active, dynamic, and transformative. It is a confident trust (biblical hope) in God that produces action, obedience, and much perseverance – even in the face of overwhelming odds and obvious obstacles. Those mentioned in this “Hall of Faith” clearly demonstrate, by their obedient actions, that biblical faith always results in courageous action, rather than the paralysis of human fears.

Furthermore, biblical faith is not faith in faith itself — not something stirred up from the human spirit (as often being taught by many ministers in many modern-day churches). No, it’s faith in God Himself and His Truth – removed and separated from the best efforts, wisdom and thinking of any human being! This single, proper, object of one’s faith holds all the power and determines faith’s effectiveness. The woman with the issue of blood (Matthew 9, Mark 5, Luke 8) had been suffering from a hemorrhage of some 12 years and had spent all her money seeking healing from the doctors. This ailment deemed her socially and spiritually “unclean” and forced her into isolation. Nonetheless, her persistent, single-minded faith in Jesus Christ caused her, in unwavering belief, to reach out and touch His garment. Notice her thoughts as recorded in Mark 5:28 . . .

“If I just touch His garment, I will get well”

Her belief was not based on anything other than the known works and reputation of Jesus Christ! One does not overcome fear by mustering up more positive thinking or by believing harder in our own abilities. No, fear is overcome by knowing God / Truth more deeply and trusting Christ more fully and completely!

As one matures spiritually, growing in a better / fuller understanding of our Lord’s nature / character, His sovereignty, love, power, and faithfulness towards those who believe, one’s genuine faith increases, and the fears that creep in, making us timid and holding us back, will continually weaken! Ultimately, faith-living becomes the lifestyle of every believer as one trusts the Lord more and more each and every day of our lives. Therefore, Christ’s genuine followers come to comprehend and actively experience Hebrews 11:6!

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

Help us Lord Jesus, may we be / become Your men and women of genuine biblical faith that will indeed triumph over all our worldly, cultural, religious, relational, situational / circumstantial, family, and personal fears!

We can do this … FAITH OVER FEAR … let’s work on it together by encouraging one another to actually LIVE OUR FAITH OUT LOUD!

ABOMINATION

This biblical word, which occurs at least 170 times in the scriptures, is not familiar to many New Testament believers, primarily because it is mainly associated with the event known as “the abomination of desolation” during the last days tribulation period (Daniel 11:31, Matthew 24:15, Mark 13:14). However, it has substantial and significant use for those who desire to more fully understand the very nature of our God and our Savior, Christ Jesus.

The dictionary definition of “abomination,” which is typically a noun, reads, “something that causes disgust or hatred,” and was common terminology during the 1800s. Biblically speaking, “abomination” is a powerful term, generally referring to something that is absolutely and unequivocally detestable, and / or profoundly contrary to God’s Holiness. This encompasses willfully ignoring His instructions, participating in idolatry, improper worship, acts of immorality, unethical behavior, and dishonesty. Spiritually and fundamentally “abomination” refers to any practice or attitude that distances individuals from God’s desired purposes and plans, which includes both His Truth and His Love, accompanied by His Holiness, Righteousness and Justice.

There are six things which the Lord hates, yes, seven which are an abomination (Hebrew – ‎tow`ebah; repulsive, even dangerous and destructive, abhorrent) to Him: 1) haughty eyes, 2) a lying tongue, 3) and hands that shed innocent blood, 4) a heart that devises wicked plans, 5) feet that run rapidly to evil, 6) a false witness who utters lies, 7) and one who spreads strife among brothers.    

Proverbs 6:16-19

Be assured, all 7 fall into the same category of being an “abomination” to our Lord, and if that’s the case exactly where do we stand?

HAUGHTY EYES – displaying a proud look, being unkind and irreverent toward others!  See Psalm 101:5, Proverbs 21:4, 30:13

A LYING TONGUE – speaking falsehood, which implies a wrong motive. Vanity, improper ambition, and even cowardice serve as the generators and patrons of lies. A pure heart has no motive for falsehood; however, sadly, there exist social pressures that work to loosen the mind and tongue… such as expectations, and the somewhat confused human need for acceptance and approval! 

See Psalm 31:18, 120:2, Proverbs 12:22, Ephesians 4:25

HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD – heartless cruelty. A lack of understanding for God’s created creatures … inflicting needless pain, incivility, and death upon any human, as well as other life forms!

See Isaiah 1:15, 59:7, Proverbs 28:17, Exodus 20:13

A HEART THAT DEVISES WICKED PLANS – this is vicious scheming. This is birthed from pagan concepts and wicked thoughts / imaginations. These individuals are continuously inventing some form of evil behavior, usually with the intent of damaging others, for satisfying some demented dream, or to fulfill some delusional pleasures! See Genesis 6:5, Proverbs 24:2

FEET THAT RUN RAPIDLY TO EVIL – an eagerness to participate in mischievous sinful / wicked activities / behavior. These have an unrestrained passion / vigilance and a lust to participate in questionable, improper and / or immoral activities.

See Proverbs 1:15-16, Isaiah 59:7, Romans 3:10-18

A FALSE WITNESS WHO UTTERS LIES – a slanderer. Socially attempting to destroy another’s reputation, credibility, or successful good / positive achievements. This ungodly behavior may be motivated by jealousy, a lack of purpose or acceptance, poor training, and / or a desire for some type of social recognition!                                                                                                            

See Proverbs 12:17-18, 19:5, 19:9, 21:28, Matthew 15:19

ONE WHO SPREADS STRIFE (sows discord) AMONG BROTHERS – here lies wicked, evil intentions. Someone who intentionally works to damage, disrupt, destroy, and / or sever relationships, friendships, and / or even quality organizations (like Christ’s True / Believing Church)!

See Proverbs 6:14-15, 16:28, 22:10, 26:20, 2 Timothy 2:23, James 3:6, 14-16

All of these things are an “abomination” to God, who desires exactly the opposite for His people . . . wanting harmony, peace, unity, love and truth to prevail among those of the kingdom even while stationed in this world. The moral hideousness of the world is obvious where these seven evils abound. However, the righteousness and holiness of our Lord clearly emerges when one considers His displeasure / hatred for these things which are 100% foreign to the nature and character of the ONE! TRUE! LIVING GOD! 

While we live in a world set on “abomination,” it is not our responsibility to rid the world of these evils except through the spreading of the Gospel. Therefore, we should individually and corporately, as Christ’s Church body, consider these behaviors totally, unquestionably, and absolutely reprehensible – never to be found or tolerated among us!

“For the devious are an abomination to the Lord; But He is intimate with the upright. The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.”

Proverbs 3:32-33

Meditate on His Word, day and night and you’ll find an unbelievable escape and freedom from the mindset of those who are perishing. (see 1 Corinthians 1:18-19)

MERITOCRACY

It seems that recently this word is being tossed around by the western media, politicians, and government entities in our nation. Initially, one must ask, is this a biblical concept, and then attempt to understand its advantages and / or disadvantages in various applications.

At the outset of this discussion, one must fully recognize that within the framework of authentic Biblical Christianity, the forgiveness of one’s sins and the gift of salvation is not, cannot, and will never be based upon or granted to an individual as a result of human merit! (See Romans 5:8, Ephesian 2:8-9) If humans could obtain a right standing before God through meritocracy, God’s gift, the sacrifice and atoning death of Jesus Christ, would have never taken place or have been required for the redemption of humanity!  

Way too many people assume that how they live their lives will make them acceptable or not acceptable to God. That’s a common lie from world religions and the enemies of Biblical Christianity! Sadly, most humans, when confronted on how they will fare when they die and meet God, say something like, “Well, I think I’ll be all right, I’ve never done anything really wrong, never really harmed anyone, and I am better than most.”

TRAGIC!

Romans 6:23 speaks distinctly, 

“For the wages of sin is death, but  the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

A gift doesn’t come through a meritocratic system. It is no gift at all if it is somehow earned! Nonetheless, there are meritocracy concepts revealed in the scriptures – some good and some not so pleasant.

Nonbelievers are all judged according to their works / deeds. (See Romans 2:5-6, Revelation 20:11-15) This is a perfect meritocratic system. Sorrowfully, no one did enough … therefore, none are found to be worthy, gaining or being awarded the gift of eternal life, the forgiveness of sin, and redemption, which is only granted to those who accept the meritocratic life and death of Jesus Christ as the means / process of their eternal redemption / salvation.

For a believer in Christ Jesus, there is also a meritocratic system! However, this one provides rewards based upon what is accomplished while alive in Christ Jesus on the earth (See 1 Corinthians 3:10-13, 4:5, 2 Timothy 4:8), rather than a system of properly earned punishment / judgement (See Romans 3:23). The parable of the “Talents” also presents a meritocracy in which the 3 servants are participating and dealt with according to their deeds.

Now when it comes to human governmental systems, meritocracy can be used as a viable instrument for good and blessing or for corruption. Simply put, meritocracy rewards hard-work and the continued development and use of skills / abilities. In a perfect setting, those who are willing to use their skills and work are rewarded based on their accomplishments or lack thereof, similar to that of the 3 servants in the Parable of the Talents. In this system, language, social class, gender, wealth, skin color, nationality, culture, DEI quotas / concepts, etc. would have no bearing at all; however, education, training, experience, and on-going productivity would potentially provide greater opportunity, advancement, and reward based upon performance and achievement. In other words, promotions are based upon more than showing up, who one knows / personal connections, favoritism, one’s maneuvering within a company’s system, or even the number of years on the job / tenure.

Again, in an ideal system, which doesn’t exist due to human sin nature, compensation is based on pay-performance models, and career advancement / opportunities are based upon their potential, merit, etc., regardless of an individual’s background.

One of the potential downfalls of this system is if everyone is required to perform or produce equally without regard to their own actual abilities. In the Parable of the Talents, the 2 servants did not produce equally, nor were they rewarded equally, but instead, in accordance with their accomplishments.

In government, like that of the United States, this system is seldom used in an equitable fashion and actually becomes inefficient and defective. Seldom are individuals promoted or appointed to positions based on merit. Much different than that found in the scriptures! However, this may be changing a little in the USA with local, state and even national government organizations.

A Silicon Valley start-up company once used a skill-based screening process to identify the highest-performing talent. The imperial bureaucracy of China has used competitive examinations within the communist party to appoint government officers and officials. The British East India Company used competitive examinations to both hire and promote its workers. Needless to say, this type of management results in hard-work, diligence, and continued stewardship of both personnel and resources.

In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.                         

Proverbs 14:23

The Lord expects all His people to actively use their gifts, skills, talents, abilities, and opportunities in this life wisely, for His glory, and for the provisions, needs, and desires of one’s life in this world. However, believers should refuse the trap of trusting in their own abilities and riches (See Proverbs 11:28). In addition, we are called to live without envy and / or greed (See Psalm 37:7).

It’s impossible to identify whether meritocracy is, on the whole, good or full of corruption, because it can be used either way, depending on the moral and ethical character of those managing the system. If incorporated by God Himself, perfect – left to humanity, who knows! Is meritocracy at odds with a Christian worldview and the foundation we rest and build upon from the scriptures? No, but it can be heartless, cold, and lack empathy as an exclusionary, graceless, merciless system … none of which are things which we, as the children and heirs of Christ, are called to exemplify.

Recently we had several participants in the ministry of West Oaks Fellowship complete our 1st Connection Class of 2024. I’m so grateful for their participation and the opportunity we had to just talk a little and get to know one another much better. PTL, I’m looking forward to their service at WOF!

During our Connection Class, we often got side tracked on various topics, which is always fine with me, even though I didn’t get close to covering all I had hoped to cover. However, one rabbit trail awakened me to a potential, and no doubt a genuine, need in our body.

Unquestionably, we are desirous of all the Lord’s children, the people of belief / faith, maturing spiritually, as well as growing in their understanding and become true students of His Word.

There were many questions about bible software and various books that one should possess in order to enhance one’s biblical studies.

Therefore, I’m providing a list of what I would call “essential tools” for the on-going pursuit of bible knowledge and theological understanding.

SOFTWARE

Bible Gateway is a valuable, free online tool available through the internet. It easy to use and there is no fees or charges.

OneTouch Light is a free version of Biblesoft intended for new users that offers a limited sampling of the Bibles, commentaries, and topical reference works.  Online, more advanced versions are available through monthly subscription fees.

Bible Analyzer is a free, cross-platform Bible study program with more than 100 free high-quality add-on modules and Premium Titles. It allows users to search for a word, words, or phrase via the suggestion box. There are also advanced searching capabilities. Bible Analyzer features a Quick Entry feature as well, and even allows you to add your notes to any book, chapter or verse.

e-Sword is a free Bible software program featuring powerful searchers that are simple to use. It lets you enter as many words you want to search for and select the settings. The integrated editor can be used for creating your own sermons, Bible studies, study notes, or journaling. There is also spell-checking and a thesaurus.

Logos Bible Software is a digital library application developed by Faithlife Corporation and is designed for electronic Bible study. In addition to basic eBook functionality, it includes extensive resource linking, note-taking functionality and linguistic analysis for study of the Bible – both in translation and in its original languages. Costs are from $295 to $10,800 with lots of student discounts available.

Olive Tree is a free app, however, all add-ons have a fee from a few dollars to hundreds. It presents all the relevant information in your library alongside Bible passage. Users can take notes, highlight verses, and bookmark specific passages so they all sync automatically to any device. Olive Tree also touts an integrated store that lets you assemble a reference library that will be available on several devices.

BibleSoft is an easy-to-use PC study Bible that includes thousands of reference works, specialized libraries, and collections of various theological works. Basic cost is $2000 with lots of fee-based add-ons. Student discounts are available.

STUDY AIDS / REFERENCE BOOKS

Everyone who would like to engage in serious study needs at least a couple of Systematic Theology works, a good Bible Dictionary, a Topical Bible reference book, a synoptic / harmony work or two, and a Bible Encyclopedia, along with a handful of good Bible translations (not other types of Bibles).

I have no exact recommendation on a synoptic / harmony of the Gospels work, but there are many available.

My deepest and most sincere desire is for everyone at WOF to become a true bible student … “accurately handling the word of truth!”

Generally speaking, I own the reference books that I’ve recommended above and anyone is welcome to come into the library and look at them. However, I am unable to lend reference books out anymore, because when people fail to return them, it breaks up the set and becomes very difficult and sometimes quite expensive to obtain one book out of a set. Nonetheless, we do lend out other books for church members to use.

Consider the words, the prayer of our Lord, Jesus Christ in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”

FEAR

Here’s a non-biblical definition of fear: A strong, sometimes uncontrollable, unpleasant emotion, caused by actual or perceived danger and / or threat induced by something or someone.

Have you ever wondered why the word “fear” appears so many times in the Bible? In fact, there are over 500 references throughout the scriptures … some referring to fear as described above, others reminding us to “fear God,” and a few offering instruction for faithful believers, encouraging us to “fear not.”

The first biblical passage using “fear” is found in Genesis 9:2 in respect to the animals of God’s creation’s perspective on humanity, and the last is found in Revelation 19:5 concerning the Lord’s bond-servants offering Him praise. Needless to say, these two words don’t have the same meaning in their original language. The Revelation verse refers to “fear” as being in awe and reverent before the Lord, while in Genesis, the “fear” is that from the perspective of trembling, or being in terror as standing before a superior being / power.

Undoubtedly, it is right and good for us, as believers, to “fear” God by demonstrating genuine reverence, deep respect, and honor towards Him.

Some would argue that three types or categories of fear exist:

  • Rational Fear occurs where there is a real, imminent threat.
  • Primal Fear is defined as an innate fear which is somehow pre- programmed into our brains.
  • Irrational Fears are the ones that don’t make logical sense and may vary greatly from person to person.

Others come from a different, more descriptive perspective:

  • Fear of Failure and / or Success.
  • Fear of Rejection.
  • Fear of Change / Unknown (loving the status quo, even if change is needed).
  • Fear of Speaking (publicly).
  • Fear of Imperfection (or not being good enough / judged).
  • Fear of Vulnerability (being open, showing weaknesses).
  • Fear of Time (chronophobia – the passage of days, months, years).
  • Fear of Loneliness.

Biblically, fear can be good for a believer, or it can become tremendously destructive like the lyrics of a song we sing, “fear is a liar!” However, fear can serve as a motivation to follow the Lord, living righteously and humbly serving Him as one’s Lord. In addition, every individual, at some point in their life, must ask the questions, “What am I afraid of?” and “Are my fears, real or perceived, stopping me from achieving what the Lord is asking of me in this life?”

I know this will sound over-simplified to many, but biblically, there are actually only 2 fears in our world. (I know, “what about my fear of falling or fear of wasps or snakes?” … I’m not suggesting that they are not real)

THE SPIRIT OF FEAR

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity (fear / cowardness), but of power and love and discipline (sound / right judgement).

According to this verse, we as believers, have been supernaturally granted the exact opposite of timidity, fear, fearfulness, fright! I’ll never forget at Hurricane Harvey (6 years ago last Sunday), when I was trying to get back to our house in order to take care of Brenda and Wofetoo — I had no fear. Tommie Elpers drove through really high water (at least 4-6 feet deep in places on FM 1093 to drop me off near the back entrance to our subdivision. I jumped in a boat that a fellow resident was navigating and we tore down a 6 foot wood fence to get in. He dropped me off once we saw some dry ground and houses that weren’t flooded. However, that wasn’t our section! To get to our home, I still had to walk through chest-high water, and then once in our area, avoid all the underground drains. The Lord was with me, I was never afraid or fearful, I got home and then we were ultimately delivered to safety by another neighbor who had a military hummer that would run, with the now deeper water, in the cab. The young lady from across the street, who went out with us and another senior couple were all scared to death. Now, I’m not saying I had anything other than a confidence / trust that I was moving rightly and that the Lord was directing my path / every step. Did we suffer loss? Sure, a great one, almost everything in our home destroyed, plus all the damage to the house (as many of you remember).

Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Fearing God leads to an abundant (blessed) life! It brings wisdom, it provides refuge, and it shows / fully demonstrates our reverence for / to God. This kind of fear is extremely healthy. Too often, God’s people forget that our Lord is omnipresent and omniscient. Fearing Him is to love Him and show forth our willingness to obey and submit under His leadership and direction (guidance) even in things / times / circumstances / situations we do not understand!

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.

Brothers and sisters, here’s the bottom line …

Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

May this truth be alive in all Your people, Lord, and especially those of us that gather for worship and teaching at West Oaks Fellowship! Let us be fearless (“fear not” – from Isaiah 41:10 above) because we know, and are confident, that You are with us 24/7!

The word “sealed” has many meanings and is used in numerous ways in our everyday language; however, when it comes to its use in Scripture, therein one finds great spiritual significance for each and every true disciple of Jesus Christ!

As an example, let’s consider Ephesians 1:13-14 …

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation — having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.

In this incredible passage that speaks volumes to every believer in Christ Jesus, Paul employs the Greek root word “‎‎sphragizo” – to stamp (with a signet or private distinguishing mark) for security reasons or preservation and/or permanency (both literally or figuratively); by implication, to keep, seal up, or plug (as in stopping something up / keep from leaking). In Matthew 27:66, Christ’s tomb was “sealed” for security purposes. Revelation 20:3 reminds us that Satan is “sealed” (to shut him both up and out) in the abyss for 1000 years during the millennial reign of Christ and His redeemed, resurrected, glorified saints / priests! (see Romans 8:17; 2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 5:10, 20:6)

Accordingly, we as believers have been “sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (PTL) “as a pledge of our inheritance!” Now I’m not sure any of us can really understand or comprehend privilege, unless we can fully wrap up this undeserved spiritual endowment that’s been abundantly poured out upon His people. We carry the distinguishing mark of Jesus Christ in the presence, power, preservation, and permanency of God’s Holy Spirit. Unique in all of creation and humanity … we are the ones sealed up by Him “as a pledge on our inheritance!”

“Pledge” – as used in this text, is a Greek word coming from a Hebrew origin, meaning the front-end part of the purchase-money, or in reference to assets that are given / paid in advance as security / a guarantee that the rest of a specific price will be paid in full. This is paid in earnest, from which modern-day real estate contracts derive the term earnest money. As a spiritual and theological application, Jesus Christ has purchased us for / on behalf of God the Father by His own shed blood (see Revelation 5:9), and then, for one’s own assurance, God’s Holy Spirit has been dispatched to be with us and in us, as His possession, “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” (See 1 Peter 2:9) This is security / a guarantee that our Lord’s sacrifice and atoning death, coupled with His indescribable grace and our simple faith / belief in Him, provides every genuine believer with their inheritance … everlasting life, as well as an eternity in His presence. As His people, we are even boldly instructed to confidently rest in and fully rely on this perpetual, immutable truth. (see Hebrews 4:1-16)         

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father.” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Later, in Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, he reminds believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God in Whom they have been “sealed” while awaiting the day of redemption. (see Ephesians 4:30) Note, believers are “sealed,” not by anything one may achieve or instigate according to their own will or power, but as the authoritative, commanding act of God! One is brought into a life lived by faith in Christ Jesus by a supernatural act of God according to His lovingkindness, mercy, and of course, sovereignty and providence. Then by that same mechanism, “sealed” by Him, for Him, and ultimately stamped with this distinguishing mark for His glory! 

To be “sealed” with God’s Holy Spirit as a pledge of our inheritance in Christ is the gracious gift of God, whereby He demonstrates the authenticity of a believer’s relationship with Him. Here is full-fledged proof / evidence of His authority, His ownership, and His commitment to each one of us forever!

It’s 2023. Media is king. If you haven’t noticed by now, chances are you have been living under a rock. Whether it be movies, TV, social media, news outlets, magazines, or newspapers, media has never been more prevalent in the lives of people today. Everyone follows someone. It has never been easier to choose and filter where your sources come from and choose which voices to listen to and which voices to tune out.

The word “follow” (Gk akoloutheó) is defined in the Scriptures, particularly Matthew 16:24, as:

“to accompany, to follow one who precedes, to join as or become a disciple.”

When we closely follow these media types, we in essence become their disciple, listening to and taking to heart what is said, whether it be true or false, good or evil, or from a biblical worldview or otherwise. We often look to these people to enlighten us, to show us the way, to explain the things going on around us, or to lead us on a path forward. And more times than not, we are hoodwinked, led astray, run amuck, and flat out deceived. Perhaps we’ve been going about this wrong.

In Psalm 119:105, we read, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Bible itself clearly states that our paths are illuminated by Scripture. The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13), which is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and profitable for all kinds of things (2 Timothy 3:16), shows the way that we must follow. But there’s even better news than that!

In the past few weeks, Pastor Frank and I have preached on proper Bible study and being a disciple of Christ. These go hand in hand. If we follow the Word (Scripture), we will in turn be following the Word (Jesus Christ). Conversely, we follow the Way (Jesus Christ, John 14:6) by following the way (Psalm 119:105).

This is as clear to us now as ever before, although all throughout Scripture, the Way has been revealed to all those would have ears to hear. In the Old Testament alone, the Ancient Word (Psalm 119:9-16, 160) shows us the Ancient Paths (Jeremiah 6:16), that leads us to the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9-14).

In the New Testament, several messages by Jesus reveal who we are supposed to follow. Luke 14:25-33 is one of the most powerful messages we have about the importance of following Christ, and counting the cost of doing so. But Christ, being the Word, also emphasized the heeding of His Word throughout His ministry, such as in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:24-27).

If we continue to look forward, Paul writes regarding the Truth of God’s Word and the person of Jesus Christ at work simultaneously. In Romans 10:17, faith in Christ comes by hearing the Word. In Colossians 3:16, we are admonished to commit the Word to our hearts so deeply that it dwells in us. In 2 Timothy 2:15, we are told to be accurate handlers of the Word. And in 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul says as I imitate Christ, imitate me.

Time and time again throughout God’s Holy Word, we are shown how studying, understanding, meditating upon, heeding, and living according to Scripture is vitally united to knowing our Great Shepherd, hearing His voice, and following Him. There is no disconnect; if we wish to follow the Lord, we must follow His Word, and vice versa. Jesus Christ is at the same time the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No part of this is in existence without the other. Since this is the case, the ultimate Truth revealed in the Scripture and realized in the person of Jesus Christ must be considered when following the Lord.

Everyone follows someone. I wonder, who do you follow today? Will you merely profess Christ, and run around listening to everyone but Him? Or will you be a doer of the Word, and not merely a deluded hearer (James 1:22)? Don’t let anyone tell you any differently. Even in 2023,

STIR UP

In II Peter 1:13, the Apostle of the Lord tells his audience of fellow believers and friends that he considers it right (his responsibility) to intentionally “stir up” certain spiritual perspectives in their lives.  The Greek word found in this text, “diegeiro” is used sparingly in our New Testaments, usually in reference to awakening someone from their sleep as in the Gospels and Acts.  However in this case, it’s meaning is quite significant. Peter employs “diegeiro” metaphorically within a spiritual context demanding an awakening of the mind/heart/soul in the Lord’s people. 

This theme seems to progressively emerge as the primary objective of Peter’s epistles/letters … calling to remembrance the important truths which they had previously been taught, but of which these disciples were in serious danger of forgetting, or turning away from, due to prevailing errors in their beliefs and lifestyles.  Their minds/hearts were open and candid, but the biblical text and context implies they were not necessarily pure/sincere.  The apostle Peter regards these followers of Christ as disposed to both hear and understand the truth, and yet liable to be led astray by the plausible errors of others and the world. Such minds/hearts needed the spiritual truths of Christ’s teachings and biblical doctrine refreshed and brought to the forefront of their thinking. 

Without question, these truths were familiar — but not active; known — but not followed; understood — but not validated by obedience in the lives of these Christians.  Therefore, Peter uses this word,  “diegeiro” once again in II Peter 3:1-2 where he reveals an intended purpose of this letter . . . “This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.”

A related Greek word, “egeiro” is also used within a similar context in Matthew 25:7 where the virgins are not prepared and must awake from their slumber; In Romans 13:11, where believers are reminded to live godly and prepared, anticipating the moment (imminency) when Christ calls for His bride and His subsequent second advent (physical return to earth); In Ephesians 5:14, where Paul challenges Christ’s Church to arise or awake from its spiritual slumber and apparent apathy!  Even in a letter full of personal encouragement and precise instruction to his faithful apprentice, Pastor Timothy, Paul follows a similar path coaching him, “to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you.” (See II Timothy 1:6) Without question, Peter’s unquenchable,  insatiable hope and desire in II Peter 1:13 and 3:1-2 is to stir up, excite, awake, and arouse the faith and service of those he leads.

According to Peter himself, while awaiting His earthly departure, he will remain steadfast to this end … wholeheartedly, perhaps even with intimidation, stirring up believers so they will pursue excellence in their ministries and focus their minds/hearts upon the divine/spiritual things from above, rather than the overly enticing temptations and sins of this flesh/earth/world that so easily entangles Christ’s people.

As we approach 2012, God is stirring me in order to stir up you, and the body of Christ at West Oaks Fellowship as well.  Last year, our teachings, preaching and instruction seemed to take on a very serious posture of commitment with the  potential of suffering for our faith and the cause of Christ.  This year, our focus will be on re-kindling those things which God has birthed in us, yet for whatever reason have grown stale, ceased to function, or slipped into melancholy mediocrity.  This is my personal commitment to each of you as individuals, and to our entire fellowship. If ministers are negligent in their work, it can hardly be expected that the flock, which is entrusted to their care, will be diligent in theirs. 

Therefore, just as Peter will not be negligent (at no time or place, in no part of his work), but will be exemplarily and universally diligent, so will I, to the best of my ability as God continues to provide me strength, as your Pastor, co-laborer in the Gospel, brother in Christ, and friend.  I am also bound, by the Lord, just as Peter was, to continuously make mention of our Lord’s promises, declare His truths to His people, encourage you to obediently serve and do good to all.  I am trusting that your remembrances will be stirred and that we all awake to the things our Lord has “prepared for us beforehand to walk in!”  While some might think this effort needless or useless, the apostle doesn’t, therefore, nor shall I. 

We must: 

  1. Put in mind what we already know in order to prevent one from forgetting. 
  2. Improve our knowledge of the Lord.
  3. Put into practice what we know and what one learns. 
  4. Diligently study and pursue the things of God so one will not be shaken or moved by every wind of doctrine. 

The great doctrines/truths of the gospel, that Jesus is the Christ, that Jesus Christ came into the world to redeem and restore sinners, that those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved, and given a new life in Christ to carefully maintain and use for His glory/honor until one’s work in this world is accomplished will be our mantra. These are truths the apostles insisted on in their day and these are faithful precepts worthy of our acceptance in 2012 and in every age of the Christ’s church. These must be constantly affirmed by our Lord’s true ministers (See Titus 3:8) … believers must be well instructed and established therein, so each one can resolutely believe and determinedly behave accordingly. Even the most advanced Christian is not, and cannot, while in this world, be above the need for such stirrings and consistent reminders, nor move beyond the methods and means which God has appointed for His people/His body/His church. 

Therefore we will begin 2012 by asking, “Need To Unshelve In 2012?” because many have put things up … out of sight on an obscure shelf in their spiritual lives that need to be awakened — rekindled — stirred up.  I’m sure you’ve heard all the nonsense and speculation about the world ending in 2012 (see Fusion article on the 2012 movie from January 2010 @ the WOF website).  We  absolutely know, according to God’s Word, that this will not happen!  However, Christ may indeed appear in the clouds and call for His saints to be instantly transformed and meet Him in the air. So, if that potential exists, why not be found awake, faithfully serving, and waiting in anticipation of His call, rather than slumbering in dysfunction and snoozing?  Now, don’t just think about it!

TERRORISM

The word terrorism does not appear in our biblical text as one may currently employ the word in modern day English.  Nonetheless, the Bible clearly addresses the concepts behind terrorism and those that “bring” or “strike” terror.  Unquestionably in 21st century America, and perhaps throughout the modern world, terrorism has become a constant on the minds of most individuals, and has worked to alter our lifestyles in one way or another. Psalm 34:14 offers clear instruction to those who resort to these ungodly, almost inconceivable acts, “Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.”  Terrorism is good only in the eyes of those that seek peace through fear, and the destructive power of an ungodly, oppressive, legalistic regime that hides behind the words and works of works-based religious systems, and their false prophets who seek the total annihilation of all their opponents/enemies. Personal peace comes only through a meaningful and dynamic relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ – civil/world peace can only be envisioned and accomplished as Christ is enthroned as KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.  

Proverbs 6:16-19 reminds us that:

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”  How many of these traits are easily identified as common attributes of modern day terrorists and terrorism?

Conversely, as believers, we uphold these truths from Romans 12:19-21:

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’

To the contrary, ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.’” In addition, certainly we cannot discount the message of Nahum 1:2-3 concerning God’s wrath against Nineveh:

The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries and keeps wrath for His enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

The word “terror” appears at least 7 times in the Old Testament, and all of them are derived from the Hebrew word “pachad” which relates to a sudden feeling of fear; by implication something dreadful; great alarm or being filled/full of fear.  That’s the exact goal of modern day terrorism – cause feelings of fear in the hearts and minds of individuals … those being terrorized!  In I Chronicles 14, David overwhelmingly defeats the Philistines, and according to verse 17, all the nations were in terror/great (almost paralyzing) fear (Hebrew text) because of him.  This is the purposed/intended response of terrorism today, seeing whole communities and nations bow in terror/great (almost paralyzing) fear.

So how then shall we live in a world filled with terrorists and terrorism?                    

  • Pray (Ephesians 6:18): When suddenly our culture seems to uncharacteristically crave the necessity of supernatural intervention in the face of evil …  we are the only ones with the direct link! So pray diligently.
  • Help/Take Action (Matthew 25:40): All humans are loved by God and made in His image – a divine creation.  WWJD?  Minister according to the leadership of God’s Holy Spirit in word and deed/action!  A situation of terror will most likely present opportunity for selfless, sacrificial service.
  • Do Not Fear (II Timothy 1:7):  As images of violence, hate, blood and panic flood our computer and television screens, it’s easy to be overcome with fear.  Psalm 23:4 … “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”  Followers of Christ should be seen as sources of mental/emotional/spiritual strength, courage, comfort and peace in times of trials. Unfortunately, Christians too often respond in the exact opposite manner.
  • Have/Demonstrate Hope (confident expectation in Christ):  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope! —  Romans 15:13

In life’s worst situations, we must look to our Lord Jesus — not government, police, military, media, peers, or others — to stand firm in Christ alone.  We live and move by faith in Him under the glorious and far reaching protection of His wings … the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent ONE – TRUE — GOD!  Therefore, prepare now to properly respond should a day of terror rudely assault your life, family, etc.

ARMOR

As you’re reading this article, it’s likely that I’ve already started teaching on God’s Armor as part of our new year sermon series … “You’ll Need More Sonscreen In Twenty Thirteen.”  We’re all becoming fully equipped to stamp out SINBURN!  However, there are numerous concepts concerning armor presented in God’s Word that should be considered as one heeds the New Testament’s admonition to … “put on the full armor of God” in accordance with Ephesians 6:11. 

Generally speaking, biblical references to “armor” in both the Old and New Testaments refer to military equipment designed for the protection of the body/person, and are clearly distinguished from arms or weapons.  Heretofore, as offensive weapons developed and improved, combatants quickly learned that defensive counter-measures had to be taken in order to ensure a degree of security while engaged in battle. The types of defensive armaments employed depended on the offensive weapon of the attacker(s), on the weapon(s) that complemented the defensive protection, on the required mobility, and upon the nature of each individual battle (e.g., siege, open field, chariot, etc.)

The apostle Paul meticulously and systematically describes the “panoplía” (the New Testament Greek word for armor) and the various defensive armaments of the Roman soldier in Ephesians 6:14-17 (which we’ve been studying).  In this context, the word armor is all inclusive, meaning the inclusion of every individual piece.  However, it’s very interesting to note the occurrence of a seemingly purposeful  overemphasis in the scriptural text, encouraging the absolute need and effectiveness of every piece, thus the “full (nothing excluded) armor (all inclusive) of God.” The superb English translation, “whole” of the Greek text that is found in the American Standard Version and Revised Standard Version — both predecessors of the NASB/NASV (New American Standard)  — is excellent and admirably precise, equally in the sense of a literal translation and the idea or message being conveyed/communicated.     

While the armor was intentionally designed as body protection, to shield vital parts of the warrior, it also required a fit that allowed full mobility of a soldier’s arms and legs.  You may recall the situation in I Samuel 17:4-8.  Goliath was six cubits and a span tall (9’9″), had a bronze helmet, and was clothed with scale-armor which weighed five thousand shekels of bronze (125 pounds). He also had bronze greaves on his legs, a bronze javelin slung between his shoulders, and the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, with the head weighing in at six hundred shekels (15 lbs).   

In addition, his shield-carrier walked in front of him.  Not only was he  huge, he was fully protected and fully armed … “the whole armor.”  When young David (biblically speaking still in his youth — I Samuel 17:33) determined to take on Goliath, King Saul (I Samuel 17:38-40) clothed David with his armor, including his sword and bronze helmet (a whole or complete armament).  However, David was totally immobilized by the armor … it didn’t fit and he couldn’t walk!  Therefore, David said to Saul:

I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.

Subsequently, David took off the ill-fitting armor and proceeded against Goliath with the weapons he knew … a stick in his hand, five smooth stones (perhaps one for Goliath and each of his four brothers), and his trusted, proven sling.  

As true believers, enlisted and called as good soldiers (see II Timothy 2:3-4) in our Lord’s army, how can one stand firm or plan to launch a victorious battle against the enemy, if God’s armor lies in a corner without familiarity, untested, not trusted and unproven?  

He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

—David, Psalms 18:34

Can one proceed in the same confidence as David, so familiar with the weapons of our warfare that one would stand upon the irreversible, unalterable conviction that the one and only immutable, omnipotent God is with you?  Is there such proficiency in/with God’s armor (not someone else’s, but that which Christ has designed and provided for you)?  In other words, are your hands trained and ready for war?  Unless one has spent time in God’s whole/full armor, one is obviously and undoubtedly unprepared for the conflicts and giants that lie ahead.

The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright, But ruin to the workers of iniquity.

Unquestionably, we … every faithful follower of Jesus Christ, have a few  Goliaths to face and slay!  Some are 10′ tall and others, miniature in proportion.  Nonetheless, we have a duty and calling — stand firm, having “put on the full armor of God.”  Then, as you are trained and learn to be effective in His battle apparatus, mobilize your resources and cast a defeating blow into the forehead of your enemy (the darkness of this age), mercilessly severing its head.  Certainly the time has come!
